Frequently Asked Questions
All water sources—whether municipal or well—are vulnerable to contamination from microorganisms and chemicals. Environmental changes can affect water quality. Treating your water ensures it's safe for drinking, bathing, and cooking.
UV (ultraviolet) water treatment uses UV light to disinfect water by neutralizing bacteria, viruses, and other microorganisms—without adding any chemicals. As water flows through a UV system, it’s exposed to a special UV lamp that damages the DNA of harmful pathogens, making them unable to reproduce or cause illness.
It’s a safe, chemical-free, and environmentally friendly way to ensure clean drinking water, especially in homes using well water or cottages with unknown water sources.
- UV lamp: every 12 months, even if it still glows—germ-killing power diminishes over time
- Quartz sleeve: lasts 2+ years, but inspect and clean yearly; replace if scratched, cloudy, or older than 2 years
Most systems have a countdown timer or indicator light that reminds you to change the lamp annually. Even if the lamp still glows, it loses germicidal strength after 9,000 hours (about 12 months of use).
A water softener is only necessary if your home has hard water (high levels of calcium and magnesium). UV systems only disinfect—they don’t remove minerals. If you’re experiencing scale buildup or reduced appliance lifespan, a softener could be beneficial.

Over time, UV lamps lose effectiveness—even if they still glow—and may fail to neutralize harmful microorganisms. Regular replacement is essential for reliable disinfection.
